Purpose of the Assignment:

This assignment is designed to get you to think more deeply about how you might solve the management challenge and why your chosen approach is/is not) the “best way.” The main focus is on you discovering the latest management thinking to help you determine cutting edge solutions.

Length: 2,500 words (2,000 to 2,500)

Page Numbers: Bottom right corner

Font: Times New Roman – 11 point

Spacing: 1. 5 lines

Page Margins: 2.5cm

Referencing: Harvard style (must you used when drawing on theory to frame your question).

Writing Style: Business writing should always be in third person. Aim to be as succinct and concise as possible. This is not an essay. Use dot points, diagrams or tables where appropriate.

Tables, graphs, diagrams: Yes, these can be included in the report to illustrate or reinforce points.

STRUCTURE OF THE REPORT

Standard report structure with some additional instructions as follows:

1) COVER PAGE:

Standard – giving name, student number, course name etc

2) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Executive Summary is brief summary of the entire document, including the

key findings and any conclusions reached. It should be no more than 70% of one page. It is not included in the word count

3) TOC – Table of Contents

This gives the titles of all of the headings along with the relevant page number.

This is not included in the word count.

4) INTRODUCTION

The introduction states what the report will address, but is not a summary of the

report as it does not convey any of the conclusions. It may be something similar to “This report will address the challenge presented by the industry representative. It redefines the challenge offered and conducts a literature analysis and presents some solutions..”

5) RESTATEMENT OF PROBLEM AS A RESEARCH QUESTION

In this section you will re-state the problem presented in Assignment 1 as a research question. You may remind the reader of the challenge and then re-

formulate it as a Research Question, but first you must research the characteristics of a research question.

6) LITERATURE REVIEW OF THE PROBLEM

Undertake a literature review of contemporary management literature that will help you to better understand the nature of the management challenge, how theory can inform a solution and what (if anything) has been tried before to solve this kind of problem (e.g. Has this challenge occurred before? Maybe in another industry? Has it been solved?) Your information should be both broad and deep. Once you have collected the information, you have to critically analyse it.

7) MODELS AND THEORIES WHICH EXPLAIN & IDENTIFY SOLUTIONS

Identify and select appropriate tools, models and theories that will help you to

understand the problem through the lens you have chosen. The “lens” may be a

frame from Reframing Organizations (Bolman & Deal 2013) and/or a Strategic

Tool from Strategy Builder (Cummings & Angwin 2015) – links to both available on Blackboard. Analyse the tools you apply so as to highlight advantages and disadvantages of the approach and to list assumptions made and additional information required.

8) SOLUTIONS DEVELOPED

In contrast to the first assignment, here you will use theory and tools to devise

and explain solutions to the problems.
